Learn Capoeira with Carlos Lopes on Saturday, January
30th!
BETA Academy will host its first Capoeira workshop,
taught by Carlos Lopes, at 3:00 pm on January 30, 2010.
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that
originated in African salve culture during the 19th
century. A diversified martial art, it incorporates
self- defense techniques, dance, game, and music.
Carlos Lopes is a native of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerias, Brazil. He began training Capoeira over 14 years ago, as a member of Senzala and guidance of Mestre Peixinho. In October of 2009, Carlos joined Oficinda da Capoeira, led by Mestre Ray. He has taught Capoeira in the Washington, DC area for three years.
This Saturday afternoon workshop is open to all levels. It will begin with warm-ups, stretches and strengthening exercises. Basic movements and skills will then be taught and practiced with drills, sequences, and cross floor exercises. At the end of the workshop, students will also have the opportunity to participate in a small roda (a circle of people who play musical instrucments, sing and clap their hands to set the rythm for the game). The roda will provide students with the chance to practice movements, techniques and strategies that were taught during the seminar.
The cost of the two-hour workshop is only $15. To RSVP for the workshop, send an email with your name and contact information to info@betaacademy.com.

workshop at BETA Academy on Saturday, December 12th .
Mike
Fowler is a two time ADCC (Abu-Dhabi Combat Challenge)
veteran who has defeated some of the top grapplers in

Women Only Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Classes Taught by
Renowned Competitor and Instructor
BETA Academy proudly launched Washington D.C.’s first
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu program exclusively for
women.
In these classes, women learn to defend themselves on
the ground, the area of combat most often neglected by
traditional self-defense courses. Women in this class
learn to effectively use the battle-tested methods of
BJJ that enable a smaller, weaker person to defeat a
larger, more powerful attacker, all the while getting a
great workout.
Classes
will be taught every Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM,
by
Elyse
Goldberg,
the fierce Purple Belt who recently moved here from
Philadelphia to ravage the tournament scene. Elyse,
a Team Lloyd Irvin/Team Leo Dalla affiliate,
recently won both her weight class and the Open
Purple Belt Division in the last Submission Only
Tournament.
Do not miss out on the opportunity to train with Elyse
by taking advantage of the free week trial of classes
at BETA Academy. To inquire about private lessons with
Elyse, contact her directly at
egoldberg@betaacadeyy.com.
